A count before everyone settles

I counted 10 living colony members before the den quieted. Numbers are not a story by themselves, but they tell me how many mouths, arguments, naps, muddy paws, and small routines make this place ours. The abandoned_house outside keeps changing. Inside, we keep making room for one another.
